Please
note that our August meeting will be held one week early, on Wednesday, July 31st.
The reason we are meeting early is to take advantage of a rare opportunity…to welcome Divers Alert Network as our Guest Speaker.
Be
sure to come! Just be sure to come on
the right night!!
We are planning to dive Nanaimo, BC
the weekend of October 10-13, 2002.
It will be three nights, and up to
eight dives.
The cost for 3 nights hotel and 3
days diving (including hotel, diving and all taxes) is:
Double Occupancy: $288.28 per person -- $US
Single Occupancy: $338.60 per person -- $US
The special part of this trip is
that we have extended an invitation to the Innerspace Dive Club, Portland,
Oregon, to join us for this weekend.
The Innerspace Dive Club usually does a liveaboard dive out
of Nanaimo this time of the year. We
will know in a couple of weeks how many of them will be joining us.
We hope you can make it. We will have more info for you at a later
date.
Why
sit through Seattle’s April showers when you can go on a Virtual Sail-N-Dive
with our guest speaker Eric Morris?
…On a 37' sailboat that sleeps 8,
holds 65 gallons of water, has kerosene lighting
and a 12 volt generator. It is Summer
of 1977. We pack and load our
vessel with food,
toiletries, and everything that we
can imagine. The day
has
come, and we set sail from Seattle. Our
first stop is Mexico.
After clearing with immigration we
stop to do some local shopping,
walk through the Baja, and climb to
the top of a hiking hill to see
the town. After a few days on land we are ready to leave. Our
next stop is Cabos San Lucas off
the Baja Peninsula, where we run into
our sister ship from Tacoma, WA.
(WOW!) During our fun days at
sea we dive for lobster and fish
every day for food. We get to bathe
with Joy dish detergent in
saltwater and one gallon of freshwater to
rinse every 4 days.
From there we head south to San
Benedicto.
50 miles off the coast we have
trouble with the fan belt and have to
dive. While we fix the problem, surprise!
a baby seal. And then
a Great White. Diving here is very clear, but not a lot of
reef
like Fiji. Lumpy rocks, some tropical fish, Moray,
Puffer, Angel
fish, many bat rays, and many baby
seals. We know we will be
going back to the Baja Pinisula to
see Eric's parents who came to
meet up with him for a visit at
Lapaz.
On our way back to the Baja
Peninsula we celebrate Thanksgiving
Day at sea with "Can Turkey."
We are close to Cabos San Lucas,
but getting low on fuel.
Every day we pray for the wind to
blow us to shore. One afternoon we
decide to clean the bottom of the
boat and almost get eaten by a
Great White. During our trip back toward the Sea of
Cortez we get
caught by a monsoon for 4 days of
very rough sea and 60 knot winds,
but we make it to La Paz. We spend a few months playing and
exploring the beautiful sculptured
rocks. The water is not so
clear, but diving is great,
beautiful sea fan, coral fish, lion
fish, and octopuses.
A year has gone by, and the sails are set to go
again. Everyone had a nice visit with parents and friends. Every
one also has used up all the
vacation time and sick leave available and had to
go back to the United States. The SOLO Sailing begins here.
Heading west to Hawaii and then
south of the Equator, into the
shipping lanes, BIGGER waves, and
navigation by sextant toward Tahiti.
There are many things to do on the
boat. Most of the time Eric sleeps
in the cockpit. There were many beautiful rainbows, and on a
good
day -- 20' waves. After falling into the ocean a few time --
Eric
thought-- ' the heck with the harness'.
Twenty days at sea, not
going crazy. He was beginning to doubt himself, then
finally he
found land. He could smell the trees, the flowers, and
the dirt -- '
what a wonderful scent ' -- he
thought. As he pulled into the
harbor, he was joined by half a
dozen yachts from Germany, Denmark,
Mexico, and the US. There was a small 25' sail boat that barely
made
it
-- ran out of water and the natives revived him. After three
weeks on the water, Eric was ready
for a hike on the Island of Yujahiba Tahiti.
He is the first American to dock there in a
year. The Island of Yujahiba has only 150 people. Its languages
are Polynesian and French. The main income in from coconuts. No
electricity, no television. The school is taught in French. In 1977
diving was not very popular in
Tahiti. However, the visibility was
80'.
And here Eric left us in
anticipation as he had to suspend our virtual sail and dive trip.
The people are very excited to have
an American on their
Island, and in his honor -- they are planning a
feast and will be serving Turtle
Soup. (They only do this on special
occasion) This is the end of Part
one. Well, ESDC Divers, we hope
you can make it to the meeting and
let us take you around the world:
Part Two: Sailing and Diving Around the World -- Tahiti to Fiji to
Washington. We hope to see you.
Please pay your 2002 dues right away. We need this money to operate the club for the year. If you have any questions about how much you owe, or when, or why, please ask Rodney the Treasurer or any board member.
May 9th is the departure
date for eleven Cozumel divers on another great ESDC trip. Have fun,
everyone! Good journey and dive safely.
