Please
note that our August meeting will be held one week early, on Wednesday, July 31st.
The reason we are meeting early is to take advantage of a rare opportunity…to welcome Divers Alert Network as our Guest Speaker.
Be
sure to come! Just be sure to come on
the right night!!
Happy Springtime fellow club members.
Summer is around the corner and that means royalty is coming. By royalty I mean King Salmon (you know, the
big ones). These fish making their
final journey create an awesome spectacle for divers and snorkelers. My name is Chad and I hereby invite you to
join me on an adventure that will not be soon forgot. The date is July 20, 2002. I am hosting a snorkel tour on
the north fork of the Stillaguamish River near Darrington. This trip will be a snorkel-only activity
that will last about 4 hours, after which we will have a pot luck style
barbeque on the river bank.
Due to the possibility of low water levels, I recommend that you wear
tennis shoes or some other shoe that is comfortable to walk in and will fit in
your fins. We could have to walk
between some of the pools and the rocks can be very slippery. Also, depending on the weather leading up to
the trip, I recommend bringing a dive skin for warmth. Don't forget to bring your U/W cameras, as the fish have other things on their minds
and can easily be approached for excellent photo ops. This is going to be a great club outing, hope to see you
there. Feel free to call me for more
details. I need people to volunteer to
bring barbeque goodies, so don't be shy.
Keep up the
bubbles......

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE:
Lighthouse Diving Center has invited us to the Scuba Fest on the weekend of June
21, 22, 23. This is a great way to meet sales representatives and
manufacturers. Update & review your dive gear and equipment. Lighthouse Diving
Center is located at 8215 Lake City Way in Seattle. ESDC will
have a booth during the Fest, which will be
a perfect opportunity for our membership drive. We need volunteers to staff our booth.
We will have a sign up sheet at the meeting. Please join in and let us know what
day you would like to be at the Scuba Fest to promote our club.
Thank you in advance for your support.
CITY OF SHORLINE "CRITTER" TOUCH TANK & ESDC PICNIC :
For the past 8 years ESDC has provided our special
service to the non-diving community at the Richmond Beach Saltwater
Park. These beach events are sponsored by the Seattle Aquarium and the City of Shoreline.
We go diving and collect marine critters for the touch tanks on the shore.
Richmond Beach visitors are thrilled to see and touch the wonderful creatures we
are privileged to know every time we practice our sport.
There will be a certified beach naturalist available to answer questions and
explain the lifestyles of the critters to children and families.
The City will provide us with a truck to
haul our gear down to the beach at 9:00am. Diving at Richmond
beach is very laid back, and suitable for all skill levels. We will
have a small picnic after our dive. Bring your favorite side dish to
share. This event is excellent for the whole family. We hope to see
you on Sunday, June 23, at 9:00am in the upper parking lot.
IMPORTANT DATE: Remenber, our regular August 7th meeting has been changed to
Wednesday, July 31st. The reason we are meeting early is to take advantage of a
rare opportunity…to welcome Divers Alert Network as our guest speaker.
CONGRATULATIONS: May door prize winners:
Jason Miller -- Goody Bag; Richard Pearson -- Dive Beacon
New DAN O2 Graduates:
Loogpla Cowden & Mike Hughes -- Way to go!
ALKI LIGHTHOUSE FREE TOURS:
The little lighthouse located at 3201 Alki Avenue SW in
West Seattle, situated at the south entrance to Elliott Bay will be
open weekends from noon to 4:00pm. The tours will be guided by
members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Alki Point Light
Station is still an active lighthouse. The current structure,
established in 1913, is fully automated and its fog signal
electronic. A fourth order Fresnel lens is on display as well as
some of the original work room machinery. The lighthouse is owned
and maintained by the United State Coast Guard. They will be open
through Labor Day, including the National Holiday 3-day weekends.
ENJOY!
HOOD CANAL WEEKEND: We still have space available for
diving on the Canal for the weekend of June 21,22,& 23. We are
staying at the Diver's Inn. For more information see any club
officer or Mike Hughes at the meeting, or you can contact Mike via
E-Mail divec2c@yahoo.
1st Class Paradise Diving --
Soaring along Coral encrusted walls with hundreds of
tropical fish in a warm current dive with 150-200 viz. Underwater
grottos and caves, pure white tropical sand, sun that made my back
and shoulders peel in post card size sheets of skin, a modern casa
with grass and fountains and outside dining area, pool, outside
shower, rinse basin for our gear, B-B-Q grill, Pool, Fans and
airconditioning. I could almost talk myself into a trip back just
writing this. Fantastic to say the least. Food so good I didn't
even miss my chocolate although I did sneak in a banana split with
breakfast one morning. A wreck dive with 300 ft plus viz (Serious,
the wreck was 300 ft. long and I could see way past the bow from the
exact end of the stern) A whole dive trip around the whole island of
Cozumel one day with Conch Ceviche and sport fishing in between.
Dorado to BBQ the next night with our Dive hosts from Albatros
Charters, Rita and Burek, (who were no less then perfect operators in
their own right) The ceviche was made right on the boat during our
second dive of the round the isle adventure and there was pretty much
unanamous agreement that it was possibly the best ceviche any of us
had ever had up to this point. A trip on the ferry to Playa Del
Carmen on the Yucutan Peninsula to do a two tank dive on the Dos Ojos
Cenotes where the viz. was so good you almost tried to talk to your
partner underwater because it seemed you were looking at them in a
clarity that made you forget you were even in water. The truck ride
in the back of the modified flatbed old timer was a trip in itself as
were the tropical birds, monkeys and Iguanas. The Cenote entrance
was a 8 foot circular hole in the limestone and all the gear was
roped and pullied down and I had my camera ready to see how they were
going to get Mel down but he made it down the steel ladders and steps
ahead of me. Beautiful, light shining thru the darkness every once
in awhile with limrstone stalagtites and stalagmites all over. (The
viz.was that perfect too, one could almost expect a horde of bats to
come out at you in some of the darker caverns) A nice dinner in
Playa Del Carmen then back on the ferry. Everyone slept well that
night. 15 dives total except Mel and Peter Tang who dove an extra
day for 17 dives. (While the rest of us went back to the mainland,
rented jeeps and explored the Jungle and Pyramids of the Mayan Ruins,
where we rented bicycles and also hiked to the top of the highest
pyramid to behold all the world before us. We also had the chance to
dive the Devils Throat which was a couple of underwater caves that
started at about 60-70 feet, went up a little distance and then down,
where we exited at about our maximum underwater limit for Rec.
diving and then back up again in another cave along side the first
one. All topped off by 2 earlier in the day dives then a later
sunset cruise and then a night dive. Most of the dives were
beautiful wall dives with moderate current (no work dives, just float
along) I guess I shouild mention the floating along above 3
beautiful eagle rays, large grouper, a few sharks. some Carribbean
King Crab and now that I look back at things, we also fit in a
afternoon jeep rental in the island itself (God, I,m getting
exhausted thinking about it, I don't think I even remember falling
asleep at night and how in the heck we found time to shop is beyond
me. Anyway, it was fantastic and many, many thanks to Burek, Rita
and their crew at Albatross Charters, Rolie and his young Captain
(his son) and their crew on the "Yellow Rose" (Hi Max) and to every
one in the dive club who came along and really made everything click
together.

At last month’s meeting we welcomed back Mr Eric Morris to continue his exciting
story of diving and sailing around the world. Here is the end of his tale:
When we were last with Eric in the South Seas, he was celebrating and feasting on
Turtle Soup. But then Eric had to continue with his journey. He headed
toward Bora Bora – and there the trouble began -- Shipwreck! Eric lost everything except
his life, but managed to land on an uninhabited Island where he spend 6 days
without food and little water with another shipwrecked sailor. The
two men managed to paddle 12 miles on an inflatable boat to the next
civilized lsland. It was 1979. When other sailors heard about
their situation, they all donated money for Eric and his new found
friend to return home. New Zealand Airways also donated a
first-class ticket back to the United States. WHAT A HAPPY ENDING!
Not all marine emergency situations have a happy ending, and they are a considerable
interest to us as divers. You will be pleased to welcome Mr. Dennis K. Graver
as our club speaker. Mr. Graver is the former training
director for both NAUI and PADI. His achievements include designing
the PADI Modular Scuba Course and original dive tables, introducing
multi-level diving to recreational divers, developing the Pocket Mask
aquatic rescue breathing technique, and designing the NAUI Dive Time
Calculator. Mr. Graver is the author of 32 scuba books and manuals, and
has written quizzes for Skin Diver Magazine since 1975. He is a Founder and
Director of Northwest Diving Rescue Workshops. Also, recipient of First
Australian Diver Rescue Award. Today Mr. Graver is Medical
Services Officer and Senior EMS Instructor for Camano Island Fire &
Rescue. With over a quarter century of experience as an
award-winning educator and author, Mr. Graver is uniquely qualified
to present us with INNOVATIVE RESCUE TECHNIQUES! Please join us,
we hope to see you
