Please
note that our August meeting will be held one week early, on Wednesday, July 31st.
The reason we are meeting early is to take advantage of a rare opportunity…to welcome Divers Alert Network as our Guest Speaker.
Be
sure to come! Just be sure to come on the
right night!!
Our July meeting is “upside-down” in format. W will begin at 7:00 PM with our guest speaker. We are pleased to welcome W. Lauren Mark, a representative of the Washington Sea Grant - University of WA speaking about Aquatic Nuisance Species(ANS), non-native species that invade waterways and nearshore areas of Puget Sound.
The general meeting will follow, including a rep to show off some samples of the logo garments we will be ordering.
In addition, we will be doing a night dive at Edmonds
UW Park following the meeting at 8:30pm.
On Sunday, July 21st, Mike Franz invites us out to Whidbey Island for a great day of diving and a potluck barbeque.
We will meet at Keystone Jetty at 10:00 AM. This is a delightful dive suitable for all skill levels. The sea life abounds and we often see octopus.
After the dive, we’ll make the 20 minute drive to Mike’s home. He has 5 secluded acres and a nice deck. Mike will barbeque baby back ribs for all. Everyone else please bring a dish to share and beverages.
Everyone needs to bring a lawn or camp chair.

NOTE: If it rains, the dive is on but the picnic is canceled.
I have two air cards for Sound Dive Center, Bremerton.
One is a full 20 fill and the other has 17 fills left on it.
I could use them if the SDC still had a dive shop in Port Angeles, but that one
closed. I'd be happy to sell both cards for $100. That would be $2.70 per
fill.
I can be reached at pmorg@olympus.net

My name is Phil Morgan-Ellis. On Sunday, August 11th, please join me at 9am
for a dive at Hama Hama Wall, Hood Canal. We will park along Hwy 101 --
space for 5-6 vehicles. Parking area is just North of Mile post 321 on Hwy
101. There is a steep trail down to a nice beach area. We will be
exploring the Northwall.
Once we enter the water we'll swim out to the wall that sits in 70' fsw, and
max. of 110' fsw. (125 yrds from shore) There are nice rock structures
along the way at approximately 20-40' fsw.
The beach areas are nice for picnics, and Oysters Galore. Plan to bring
lunch, water, camera, and necessities as we will not be close to the stores.
Please note change in e-mail address.... pmorg@olympus.net

Here’s for anyone interested in trying Sares Head Kayak-N-Dive again
(after we got blown off the last time). You can come watch Skip the
tipmaster blast over into the water as he unintentionally rolls into
the water several times during each trip (I'm secretly practicing to
see how well my gear is secured, the cussing part is just to make it
look good.) It’s also to make other divers get more paddling practice
when they come over to check on me (Veronica) with Loogpla laughing
under her breath. Anyway, the weather should be a bit better this
time of year (August 3rd) and maybe it will even be dead calm with 80
degree sunny weather (really Skip, too much chocolate again) I can
hope. If it’s a little blown out we even have a decent alternate this
time, which will be Larabee State Park on Chuckanut Drive (Wildcat
Cove Boat launch to Whiskey Rock) We will meet 9 AM at Rosario
Beach and gear up. This will be a 1 tank trip but bring a dry bag
with picnic supplies, water and snacks. This is a beautiful area
with really, really nice beaches and woods so family members will
probably enjoy the area also. If we get enough divers with family
members, we could have a nice picnic after we get back from the
kayak part also. Plan on joining us and if you don't want to
Kayak-N-Dive then Rosario Head, Urchin Rocks or NorthWest Island (a
good surface swim) will also be nice shore dives. Don't forget the
Camera.

President’s Column
I want to thank all that participated in the ESDC membership drive
during Lighthouse dive center’s 22nd annual Scuba Fest. I found that
there was a great interest by the patrons in our dive club. This was a great opportunity to personally
invite a number of people to our club and club functions. Upon reviewing the
numbers, we had 10 people sign up for a complimentary newsletter sent to their
homes. Thirty people expressed great interest in coming to our July 3rd
meeting. During my conversation with potential members they were very
interested in the Big Buddy program and weekend dive trips. I told them of our
Camp Casey weekend and how much fun we had at a very reasonable price. I also
mentioned the Divers Inn, where you get great lodging and diving close to home.
Loogpla in true Loogpla fashion had everything that we needed to present
information to the masses. With out her efforts this would not have happened. I
extend a big thank you to Harry Truitt for allowing us to participate in this
function.

The name of the title would lead one to believe that this article is a review of a “B” grade horror movie. What started as a typical day of diving in the Edmonds underwater park turned to anything but. My dive buddy and I arrived at the park around 8:30 am on a slightly overcast Saturday morning. In the background was good old Sinatra was hashing out the tunes slightly out of time with the passing freight train. The mood was right the gear was in working order and surprise there was a large gathering of divers. Being that the majority of divers are a very social bunch, a conversation was quickly started on the subject of attacking Cabezon in the park. A threesome had just come out of the water, jabbering of the Cabezon that attacked them. Pish-posh we all said. There is no reason for the fish to be protective; it is the wrong time of year. They continued with their story and we all listened attentively. The explained that they were minding their own business swimming along the rope highways when “BAM” this brown Scud missile dressed as a slightly mottled Cabezon came from nowhere. The divers looked in disbelief as the Cabezon continued its unrelenting attack. Eventually the fish swam away and the divers continued on their way no worse for wear, but slightly more cautious of the pesky little fellow.
With the details of the recent conversation fresh in our minds, we geared up and hit the water. The plan was to swim on the surface to the steel piling, descend and dive on the old dry dock. The water visibility was a very typical 9 – 12 feet. When we reached the dry dock, I took a position above while my buddy took the low road. As we made our along the structure I carefully looked for the grumpy Cabezon. Each time we encountered one we cut it a very wide berth. So here I am fining along all fat dumb and happy when “WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT????” A brown something crashed into my left thigh. As I flared to look at what has hit me “BAM” I took another shot to the chest. This time I saw the offending little critter swimming back into the dry dock. We regrouped, checked our gauges and made our way back to the beach. As we exited the water we told our story to a group that was heading out. Pish-posh they said there is no reason for the Cabezon to be aggressive....

Come for the weekend of September 20-22, dive with Island Dive Charter and stay at the Wayfarer’s Rest.
Mike Franz is hosting this getaway weekend. He has reserved the Wayfarer’s Rest, which is only 3 blocks from the ferry, for Friday and Saturday nights.
There is one private room available, $60 per night. The dorm features six bunks for only $20 per night.
The charter is Island Dive and is reserved for Saturday morning. The 2-tank trip is $75 and includes tanks and weights. The boat leaves from Friday Harbor—it is only a 5-minute walk from Wayfarer. We will meet the boat at 8:30 AM. For those who need more diving, a second charter is possible on Sunday.
Payment is divided into two parts. You need to make your Wayfarer’s Rest reservation with Mike and pay him directly for that. The charter boat payment needs to be made to the ESDC. Give your check to treasurer Rodney Windhorst at a meeting or mail it in. Full payment needs to be in by the September meeting.

October 10-13. There are 4 spaces left on the charter. We will be staying at the
Buccaneer Inn. The cost for 3 nights hotel and 3 days diving ( up
to eight dives) including hotel, diving, tanks & weights, and all
taxes is $288.28 per person $US for Double Occupancy, and is $338.60
$US per person Single Occupancy.
Nanaimo, known as the Harbor
City, is Vancouver Island's second largest City. If it's
breath-taking marine life you want to encounter, how about Giant
Pacific Octopus and magnificent Six-Gill sharks. Or frolic with
resident wolf eels and hundreds of playful harbor seals. Drift
through stunning gardens of colorful kelps, anemones, and sponges.
Descent along some amazing walls. Artificial reef is your passion? We
can explore natural shipwrecks as well as the Saskatchewan, the HMC
Cape Breton… the possibilities are endless. This is a trip you
do not want to miss, because October is an excellent time dive Nanaimo.
We did not get a response from the Innerspace Dive Club of Oregon in
time, so the charter has been filled with another group and us. If you
are interested we need a 50% deposit at the July meeting. We hope
you can join us.
We’re having a whole month of Beach Feast –n-Dives!
Join us on July14th at Richmond Beach Park Critter Dive, July 20th at Stillagaumish River SnorkelTrip, and July 21st Club Barbeque and Keystone Jetty.
Attend all three (3) and receive a mystery prize!
We are pleased to have a representative of the
Washington Sea Grant - University of WA speaking about Aquatic Nuisance
Species(ANS), non-native species that invade waterways and nearshore areas of
Puget Sound. In addition, we will be doing a night dive at Edmonds UW Park
following the meeting at 8:30pm.
