Please
note that our August meeting will be held one week early, on Wednesday, July 31st.
The reason we are meeting early is to take advantage of a rare opportunity…to welcome Divers Alert Network as our Guest Speaker.
Be
sure to come! Just be sure to come on the
right night!!
From the
Editor--
This note is
primarily intended for new members and new divers.
You will
find directions to various dive sites linked to our web site www.emeraldseadiveclub.org.
However,
some dive sites are a bit tricky fo find. And you may want to attend a dive whose
site is not included in the Directions file.
You are
welcome and encouraged to attend the club dives. If you don’t know exactly how
to get to the dive site, call the dive host. Don’t be shy: the host wants a
good turnout. Also call the host if you have any other questions about the
dive, especially whether it is a suitable dive for you,
Don’t miss a
dive just because you don’t know how to get to the site.

Mr. Shaun Tucker is a
field representative for DAN. He will
be joining us on Wednesday, July 31, to share with us the DAN Research Programs
2002. Our group will be one of the first
to hear this presentation. Shaun’s talk is part one of our August series on
Diving Medicine.
Join us for Diving
Medicine part two on Saturday, August 10, at the Virginia Mason
Research Center, for a tour of the Hyperbaric Chamber and to meet the Diving
Technician and supervisor for the Chamber, Mr. Troy Cook. He will be our guide for this exciting
visit.
What is Diving
Medicine? It is a specialized area of
medical science dealing with the biological effects of the undersea environment
on health and safety. Hyperbaric
Medicine is another specialized area of medical science that overlaps with
Diving Medicine. It deals with the
administration of Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO).
For the diver, HBO is the specific cure for Decompression Illness (DCI),
and is life saving in the treatment of Air Embolism. Do you know that aviators also suffer DCI due to rapid changes in
altitude or cabin pressure and occasionally require HBO therapy?
We hope you can join
us. Stay tuned for parts 3&4…
Heres the latest run-down on the
last two Richmond Beach/City of Shoreline Critter Dives and touch
tanks.
The Club and Shoreline Beach Rangers teamed up on both 23
June and July 14th for the annual events. The 1st one on June 23 was
the same Sunday as the Lighthouse Scuba Fest so there was a 1 tank
dive, quick potluck and every one sort of scattered. It was still a
terrific time and the touch tanks were a real hit. The 2nd Sunday
was still a 1 tank affair for most of us as some made a afterwards
second dive. This was one of the best turnout of members we have had
in years and the number of divers plus family and guests came close
to 30 people. Elena was the BBQ chef for the day, Lucas showed up
with his visiting father, Todd got to practice search and rescue for
his mask which was safely recovered and there was many, many new
divers. The beach rangers under the direction of our very own Fran
Murray did a swell job of keeping all the critters in the touch pools
cool and collected and there was quite a turnout of visitors. We
made some pretty good hauls of touch tank material. An octopus in a
bottle, lots of different kinds of crab, sea cucumbers. many
different types of sea stars and starfish and a lot of hermit crab
scurrying around. Now comes the food part, and plenty of it. There
was so much food I didn't have to worry about having dessert first
and I didn't look at any more food at all untill we got into the
parking lot and someone broke out
the chicken. cookies and more
melon. I went home full. A real nice time and everyone enjoyed
theirselves. The Sun even joined us for most of the day, Join us
one the next ones and thanks to everyone who showed up. Skip
P.S. I forgot to mention Ralph Sweets special dive flag
