ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE....

Six months ago I said to myself that I want to be semi-retire and travel around the world diving and visiting exotic destinations.  With that said, I created that possibility for myself, and that possibility become real four weeks ago.  By the time you read this I will be in the Florida Keys on the island of Islamorada serving as a dive master at the BSA - Sea Base working with the Sea Adventure Program. I’ll be diving three times per day, six days a week -- early to bed, early to rise - just what I've always wanted. Talk about living life fully the way I've design it!

August is also an exciting month for ESDC divers!   Rich Carton, our Precious Vice President, will be running the August meeting!  Hooray!   Ron Migas is hosting our annual club picnic this year, and Shawn Miller is hosting the fresh water "crawfish dive" on the 6th.  In addition - Jerry Dollar, club instructor, is challenging five ESDC divers in their participation of the RESCUE COURSE beginning on the 14th.   Laura Orlich is hosting the Rescue Drill and picnic with Jerry on the 29th.

I am enjoying my life, and will be enjoying my stay in the Florida Keys.  See you in September.   THINKING OF YOU....

Emerald Sea Dive Club Picnic

Sunday August 6th

Silver Lake Park

Silver Lake Park is an old established beach and picnic area that was used as a resort

and recreational area in the 1920’s and 30’s. The reserved picnic area is a private section of the park with easy access to the beach and playground area for the kids. The beach is manned by City of Everett lifeguards and usually crowded during the warm summer days. The beach has a great sand area with a dock that encloses the swimming area.

We have the area reserved from 12:00 noon until 6:00PM. or a little sooner for those that want to get a quick start. The covered area will accommodate a couple of picnic tables with extra tables available.

I anticipate having a volleyball court set up, Bocci Ball and if I can work out the details a slip and slide for the young and young at heart. The BBQ will be going so bring one of your favorite side dishes, the sign up list will be posted at the meeting, and join your dive family and friends for an afternoon of relaxation and conversation.

Give the Hook to the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament

The gory public spectacle of the annual Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament on Martha's Vineyard is more than just cruel—it threatens the very sustainability of shark populations.

Mass shark killing contests are environmentally irresponsible. A 2003 study showed that all recorded shark species, with the exception of makos, have fallen by more than 50% in the last 8 to 15 years.

Martha's Vineyard is leader for environmental conservation, but the Monster Shark Tournament undermines the community values and deals a fatal blow to sharks.

After last year's Monster Shark Tournament, in which approximately 2,500 sharks were hooked, The Humane Society of the United States called on Oak Bluffs to end the killing contest, but the town refused. The next tournament is scheduled to begin July 20—so it's not too late to stop it.

Take Action

Please contact the Oak Bluffs Board of Selectmen, the Martha's Vineyard Chamber of Commerce, and the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism to tell them that Martha's Vineyard should be renowned for its natural beauty, not the man-made ugliness of the Oak Bluffs Shark Tournament.

1. Make a brief, polite call to one or more of following, voicing your opposition to the Monster Shark Tournament:

Oak Bluffs Board of Selectmen via the office administrator, Alice Butler, at 508-693-3554. Selectman Duncan Ross can be reached at 508-693-0541.

Martha's Vineyard Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-505-4815

Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism at 1-800-227-MASS

2. After you make your calls, please take a moment to send an e-mail to the Oak Bluffs Selectmen by filling out the form to the right. Remember that your communications are always more effective if you express your opinion in your own words.
